Flasks for 2005

I have some great stuff to offer this Spring. In addition to the last batches of replates from some great crosses from last year, I have some excellent new offerings, including probable tertraploid populations of Kuntrarti Rarashati (1261) and Veitchiana (1308) using awarded parents. As I write this in early 2005, many of these crosses have seedlings from the first batch of replates that are in flower already, some setting spikes only a few weeks out of flask. Similar to the work done by the late Herb Hager at the Orchid Zone, I am breeding for quality flowers on commodity plants. Vigor is an important part of our selection and breeding program.

RB1007 Phalaenopsis John Craig

Golden Pride 'Hugo Freed' HCC/AOS
 X
Mambo 'WO8664-1'
Remake of a twenty year old hybrid. This cross is half amboinensis, and one quarter each fasciata and mannii. Both Golden Pride and Mambo get the best attributes of both parents, I am hoping that carries into the next generation. Mambo #1 is my largest, flattest Mambo. Vigorous.

RB1110 Phalaenopsis Glad Dawn

Be Glad 'Orchid Classic' AM/AOS
 X
Dawn Treader 'Echo Valley' AM/AOS
Another remake of Glad Dawn, this one should produce darker flowers with a higher percentage of red lips and pink blush. Excellent, highly recommended. Both parents represent the breeding efforts of the late, (Great) Herb Hager.

Phalaenopsis Santa Cruz Sweetheart

Nobby's Amy 'Shih Hua' AM/AOS
 X
Dawn Treader 'Echo Valley' AM/AOS
Expect high-quality multifloras from this hybrid. Both parents are very similar in appearance from slightly different lines of breeding. Nobby's Amy has Be Glad as a parent, Dawn Treader has Be Glad as a great-grandparent through Gladrose. Expect white flowers with central pink blush and strong yellow lips. Vigorous. Highly recommended.

These are now flowering, and I haven't seen a bad one yet; thus once again proving that Herb Hager was a special Phal breeder. This cross is three-quarters Herb Hager in terms of the background breeding. One grandparent is the influential parent Be Glad, another grandparent is the influential Be Glad hybrid, Gladrose. Every seedling so far has ranked its flowers, there are three first bloomers with eight flowers or buds; most of these came out of flask in November of 2004.

Hilo Dawn Example Example
Phalaenopsis Hilo Dawn

Dawn Treader 'Echo Valley' AM/AOS
 X
Hilo Lip 'LG3423-2'
Remake of a hybrid done at the Orchid Zone; we are looking for primarily light pink flowers with varying amounts of yellow on the lips. The Hilo Lip was used as a pollen parent to avoid the metabolic issues that often come with Hilo Lips (poor disease resistance and lack of vigor from inbreeding.) The Hilo Lip also has excellent conformation; the petals overlap.

Phalaenopsis Mambotris

Mambo 'WO8664-3'
 X
equestris v. Ilocos '#1'
Expect miniature flowers mostly in yellow or orange, but also possibly in "red", pink or purple. Similar to Ambotris, except with stronger yellow color and slightly smaller. Some clones will be fragrant. Extremely vigorous. Will start flowering on small plants, and will be ever-blooming on mature plants. The Ilocos form of equestris is small, and I expect these plants will stay rather small. (I made the Mambo used in this cross in 1986 using parents exhibiting strong yellow color.)

RB1167 Phalaenopsis Carmela's Spots

Carmela's Spots 'Orinda'
 X
Carmela's Spots '31383'
These are both plants selected by Dr. Michael of Orchids Orinda. The pod parent has large, flat, soft colored flowers, and the pollen parent has spotting fusing into solid purple in the center of the flower. An important grex for breeding, expect some variation in color and intensity of spotting from this mating.

RB1261 Phalaenopsis Kuntrarti Rarashati (Tetraploid)

equestris 'Riverbend' AM/AOS
 X
venosa 'El Dorado'
Tetraploid remake of this popular grex. Equestris 'Riverbend' is a known tetraploid, and the venosa has been selected from a population grown from colchicine-treated seed from a sib of selected venosas. I expect better color, size and substance as you would expect from a tetraploid popluation. Very choice, limited availability.

RB1308 Phalaenopsis Veitchiana (Probable Tetraploid)

schilleriana 'Riverbends Light Plum Jam' AM/AOS
 X
equestris 'B#100'
While I cannot guarantee the progeny are tetraploids, they are certain to be polyploid. Both parents appear to be at least tetraploid. The schilleriana is very large and flat, the equestris is from Taiwan and has good color and heavy substance. Excellent quality, highly recommended. (I would like to thank Peter Lin at Big Leaf Orchids for the use of the equestris photo.)

Pricing for flasks (unless specified otherwise in the description of the cross),
1-9 flasks: $25 ea., 10-49 flasks: $22 ea., 50+ flasks: $20 ea.

Flasks are planted out at 20-25 plants, depending on the cross, and guaranteed to contain a minimum of 15 plants; most flasks will contain more. This year, I am using the plastic salad-box type flasks; that explains the reduction in price.

Most of these will be ready for delivery dates beginning Summer/Fall 2005. Some are available only in very limited quantity. I recommend a $10 per flask deposit to hold your flasks; when they are ready to ship, I will bill you for the balance on the flasks, and for shipping. Contact me to be placed on the notification list for flask availability.
